I read this book during a time when I was learning, in a very real way, that being good at your job is not always enough. Sometimes the bigger challenge is learning how to deal with people who are difficult, dismissive, or emotionally draining without letting them pull you out of yourself.

At the time, I had just started working with a brokerage and was in a position I wanted to keep. I was being paid well, I had just earned my license, and I did not want to walk away simply because one person was making the environment harder than it needed to be.

What this book helped me understand was that even when someone else is behaving badly, I still have a part in the interaction, and my part is the only part I can control.

That was important for me.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 breaks emotional intelligence into four practical areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. For me, the value was learning how to manage my own reactions, understand what was happening around me, and respond in a way that protected both my peace and my position.

It did not teach me to tolerate disrespect. It taught me how not to let someone else’s behavior decide who I was going to be in the moment.
